Day 5

Duration: 10:00-18:00

Victory park
The idea of making an open-air museum occurred after the Victory in World War II. The 137-hectare park was opened  50 years after the war in the central part of Moscow. Aircrafts, tanks, trains are exhibited here. You can walk through the trenches, see the bombs, antitank tips, German, American and USSR aircrafts.

The museum itself located in a huge building inside the park holds an exposition impressive both in dimension and artistic power. The so called “sorrow room” has 2 million 600 thousand chains hung of the ceiling symbolizing the 26 million 600 thousand people that were killed in the war from the USSR.
A large part of the museum is dedicated to the Fall of Berlin where even the columns of the Reichstag are represented at their original height.

On the way to the museum we will stop at some metro stations that also played an important role in the years of the war. Some stations were used for political meetings, air aid shelters, others as reading rooms. 247 children were born in the subway in the years of the war. Our professional licensed guide will show you hermetic doors and the rails to close them. These doors could protect against a nuclear wave or a flood.

Returning to the center we will walk along Old Arbat Street where the guide will show you the building of the Vajtangov theater that was destroyed by a projectile at the beginning of the war and was one of the first to be reconstructed after the war.

Near the Moscow Kremlin there are two buildings that look very similar. Years ago it was a single building but the war changed everything.
In August of 1941 a projectile fell through the four floors of the building and exploded almost in the basement, thus splitting the house into two parts. A fire began in the ruins. This was one of the four residential buildings in the street. There was a shelter in the basements of this construction where about 30 people were hidden and saved their lifes thanks to the efforts of the soldiers of the 1st Battalion of Salvation in emergency situations. (local antiaircraft defense).
The remaining parts of the building built in the 80s of the XIXth century were restored. The building was restored almost entirely, exception the central fragment of the construction destroyed by the bomb. Thus, of one building, two blocks were formed that now have the address “Mojovaya Street 10, Block 1” and “Mojovaya Street, Block 2”.
