Quando chegou o poder Soviético a capital foi transferida a Moscou e o Kremlin de novo virou para o centro político. No março de 1918 o governo soviético encabeçado por Lenin se traslada ao Kremlin. Os palacios do Kremlin e os corpos da cavalaria viram para sua residência. Logo fecham o Kremlin para os moscovitas simples. Fecham as catedrais e os sinos não soam mais. Durante o poder soviético o complexo arquitetónico do Kremlin de Moscou sofreu mais que durante toda sua história. Nos planos do Kremlin de principios do século XX existiam 54 construções que se encontravam dentro da muralha. Mais da mitade destas, 28 predios, ja não existem mais. No ano de 1918 com a participação direita de Lenin foi destruido o monumento ao Príncipe russo Sergei Alexandrovich. Neste mesmo ano foi destruido o monumento do imperador Alexandre II.
No ano de 1922 durante a campanha da “privação dos valores da igreja” das catedrais do Kremlin foram sacadas mais de 5 toneladas de prata, mais de 32 kilos de ouro e miles de pedras preciosas.
Nos finais dos anos 20 começam as destruções contínuas dos predios antigos do Kremlin. O autor do estúdio fundamental dos templos de Moscou “Sórok Sorokóv” (fraseologuismo que quer dizer a multitude dos templos) Piotr Palamarchuk contou que em visperas do ano 1917 no Kremlin de Moscou existiam 31 templos com 51 altares. Nos anos do poder soviético foram destruidas 17 igrejas com 25 altares. O 17 de Setembro de 1928 o Comité Central toma la decição que marca os prazos da destrução das igrejas e os predios antigos do Kremlin de Moscou.
Nos anos 1929-1930 foram destruidos completamente dos mosteiros antigos do Milagre e da Ascensão.
Nos finais do ano 1932 em lugar dos mosteiros destruidos foi construida uma escola militar. No ano de 1933 foi destruida a igreja da Anunciação no patio de Vivenda que se encontrava ao lado da torre da Anunciação desde o século XVIII.
Neste mesmo ano foi destruido o templo mais antigo de Moscou- a Catedral do Salvador nos Pinhieros que se situava no patio interior do Grande Palacio do Kremlin.
O corpo número 14 é um corpo administrativo situado entre a torre do Salvador e o palacio de Senado. A fachada principal do predio da ao Jardim de Secreto. Este corpo forma parte da praça Ivánovskaya do Kremlin. O predio foi construido nos anos 1932-1934 em lugar dos mosteiros destruidos e o palacio pequeno Nicolaevskiy. Alguns predios do Kremlin foram reconstruidos. Ao lado da Cámara Facetada foi destruida a escada Vermelha onde passavam os czares e imperadores russos durante sua coronação, caminho para a catedral da Assunção ( foi reconstruida em 1994).
A fachada do Grande Palacio do Kremlin antes da Revolução teve 5 baixo-relevos em forma do escudo russo, águia bicéfala e alguns baixo-relevos pequenos em forma de escudos das províncias que pertenciam históricamente ao Império Russo ( Moscou, Kazán, Astracán).
No ano de 1935 os águias bicéfalas que coronavam as torres principais do Kremlin como a torre do Salvador, da Trindade, de São Nicolau e do Pinheiro foram trocados pelas estrelas de cobre dorado com a incrustação de pedras semipreciosas dos Urais. No ano de 1937 estas estrelas foram substituidas pelas estrelas do vidro rubí. A primeira estrela de vidro rubí foi instalada na torre da Subida do Água.
Durante os trabalhos da restauração de finais dos anos 60 -inicio dos anos 70 do século XX as telhas de barro que cobriam as torres do Kremlin foram substituidas pelas folhas de metal pintadas como se fossem telhas. Além disso a causa da construção do complexo comemorativo “O túmulo do soldado desconhecido” uma parte da capa superior do Kremlin foi desbastada entre a torre Angular e a torre do Paiol até 1 metro de profundidade e logo posta de novo com a finalidade de criar uma superfície monótona na cor e factura que tinha que servir de fondo ao complexo comemorativo.
O palacio Estatal do Kremlin ( antes do ano 1992 o Palacio de Congressos) foi construido em lugar do museu antigo da Armaria, levantado nos anos 1807-1810 pelo arquiteto Egotov no estilo imperio. Antes deste museu aquí se encontravam os predios da comitiva do czar Boris Godunov. Depois de destruir o museu da Armaria os canhões que se encontravam ao lado do museu incluindo o Canhão Czar foram trasladados para o predio do Paiol.
So no ano de 1990 o Kremlin foi incluido na lista da herança mundial pela UNESCO.
